The Land Degradation-Migration Nexus-
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) published a report titled Addressing the Land Degradation-Migration Nexus describing migration by land degradation and the United Nations Convention’s role to Combat Desertification(UNCCD) is playing to address the challenge. Around 3 billion in the world suffered negative impacts due to Land degradation linked with human activities. Climate change impact at a growing rate can only deteriorate the situation. It is recognized as “extreme climate or slow-onset events may lead to increased displacement” by the Scientific literature(IPCC, 2019). Factors affecting migration decisions may be social, political, economic, environmental and demographic. Migration regarding desertification, land degradation and drought is centered on risk exposure and pre-existing vulnerabilities. Migration dynamics regarding these processes are defined by the prevalence of internal movements from rural to other rural and urban.
It has been found out that migration inspired by searching for labor opportunities from the rural areas of the Mexico to USA is influenced by the rainfall patterns. A greater migration from Mexican states with strong ties to the USA has resulted in the decline in crop yields. Many socio-economic and political barriers acts as obstacles for migration because migration requires human and financial resources which may not be available for all. Due to this, the many vulnerable populations are often unable to shift during environmental stress. In order to reduce forced migration, sustainable land management and ecosystem restoration must be made compatible with developing decent employment opportunities. Forest management and agroecological practices are some of the key initiatives in this regard. Local needs must be responded upon by the land restoration efforts and assuring the rights of the most vulnerable. Individuals and communities of origin and destination can get benefits from migration. Contribution of migrants to sustainable land management in respected areas in important. Migration is an adaptation strategy to fight the adverse effects of desertification and land degradation.
